When the government introduced Making Tax Digital and quarterly reporting for sole traders, I saw a wave of panic and confusion. For many, it felt like yet another layer of complexity added to an already busy workload.
I understand the self-employed mindset. You didn’t start your business to be buried in admin, spreadsheets, and tax stress – you did it for freedom, flexibility, and control over your income.
This is personal to me. My dad, after years of working shifts, became a self-employed taxi driver. My wife is a life insurance broker. I’ve seen first-hand how hard self-employed people work, and how frustrating it can be to juggle running a business with staying compliant.
At the same time, I noticed some accountants using these changes as an opportunity to increase fees, adding even more pressure on sole traders.
