Making Tax Digital Bridging Software for Sole Traders: Options Compared

Practical UK sole trader guide · Updated 25 October 2026

Bridging software connects digital bookkeeping records, such as a spreadsheet, to HMRC’s Making Tax Digital service. You may be able to keep your existing records, but the product must support MTD for Income Tax, your income sources and the submissions you need. A VAT-only bridge will not do that job.

See the end of year Self Assessment report or explore quarterly reports.

What bridging software does

A bridge takes figures from your records and sends supported information to HMRC. It can suit a straightforward sole trader who already keeps accurate spreadsheet records and does not want to move to a full accounting package. It does not remove the need to keep records, check expenses or complete the annual return.

Some products cover quarterly updates and the annual return; others have narrower support. Check both before choosing. Our Excel and MTD guide explains digital links.

A factual comparison of the options

This is a desk review of provider information checked on 25 October 2026, rather than hands-on product testing. The table has no star scores or overall winner. Availability, supported income and prices must be confirmed before you sign up.

#GoFileSpreadsheet-based Income Tax filing, including quarterly updates and the annual final declaration. Paid filing; creating an account is not the same as free filing.Current full-year price including VAT, income types and import requirements.
flonancialAdvertises free quarterly updates and supported year-end filing for straightforward sole traders and UK landlords. Aims at income below £90,000.Whether all your income and adjustments are supported and how your spreadsheet will transfer.
!Easy MTDIts Income Tax page currently says quarterly functionality is awaiting approval and is not yet available.Get confirmation it is live and suitable before relying on it for a deadline. Do not assume similarly named products are the same.

The providers’ own pages are linked in the table. HMRC recognition is specific to a product and its supported functions; it is not an endorsement or a guarantee that every part of your return is covered.

Is there free MTD bridging software?

Some providers advertise free services, including flonancial for its supported mandatory MTD functions. Check whether free covers quarterly updates, the annual return and your actual income types. A free trial, free account or VAT-only service is different from free Income Tax filing.

Do not choose purely on the headline price. A paid service that covers your circumstances may be more useful than a free service that cannot complete your return.

Can you keep using Excel?

Potentially, yes. Keep the required digital transaction records and use an appropriate digital link into compatible submission software. Do not assume typing totals manually into another system preserves the required link. Confirm the import format and review a test file before the reporting deadline.

For example, you may maintain dated income and expense records, produce the required year-to-date totals, transfer them through a supported digital process and review the submission. The exact process depends on the products used.

Quarterly updates and the annual return

Check support for your self-employment businesses, UK or foreign property where relevant, and other income needed for the annual return. A product supporting quarterly business totals may not support every annual-return section.

Standard update deadlines are 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May. Updates are cumulative within the tax year. The 2026/27 annual return is normally due 31 January 2028. See the deadline calendar.

Questions to ask before choosing

  • Is Income Tax filing live now, rather than planned?
  • Does the software appear in HMRC’s current finder for the functions I need?
  • Does it cover every business, property source and annual-return section relevant to me?
  • Can it import my records while preserving the required digital links?
  • What is the total cost, including VAT, annual filing and support?
  • Can I export my records if I leave, and who helps if a submission fails?

Use HMRC’s software guidance and finder as part of that check.

Where TaxSnapper fits

TaxSnapper helps straightforward sole traders keep income, expenses and receipt images together and export quarterly reports or an end of year Self Assessment report. It does not submit to HMRC and is not being presented here as a filing bridge.

Before combining TaxSnapper with a submission product, confirm the export can be used in its import process, the digital links are appropriate and the whole setup covers your obligations. We are not claiming a tested integration with the providers listed.

Choose around the job you need done

If your spreadsheet works well and your tax affairs are simple, a suitable bridge may be enough. If you need bank reconciliation, complex accounts or wider business automation, compare full accounting software too. Start with the MTD checker if you do not yet know whether the rules apply.
